Brooklyn’s “noise rockers” Parts & Labor play the loudest show Chicago Public Radio has ever hosted at their studios. First segment features analysis of R. Kelly’s sexual content. Don’t skip it if you want to hear him sing about how he’s a sexasaurus. Segment two includes Parts & Labor interview and in-studio performance. They talk about their own label, crazy leaving-New-York stories, their unique instrumentation and other things. The trio will also be playing a Brooklyn show on June 22nd at Above the Auto Parts Store (600 Bushwick Ave, Brooklyn, NY). Playing with them are: Matt & Kim, Ponytail, Deathset and Golden Error.

The new Galapagos Art Space will live on 16 Main Street in Dumbo starting spring or early summer 2008. It will be New York City’s first LEED certified “green” cultural venue. The current space in Williamsburg will operate regularly through the weeekend of June 17, continuing only on weekends and special occassions from there on.

Miranda July’s sold-out reading at the 42nd street Humanities and Social Sciences Library was much more of a formal event compared to the one organized by 192 Books three days prior. The vibe here was more wine-and-cheese, both of which were present. During the intermission, however, I did spot two young men excitedly having Michel Gondry autograph an orgami bird (or was it a plane?).
More photos, and review continues, after the jump.

Bowerbirds was a treat to watch at Bowery Ballroom, when they opened for Ladybug Transistor and The Rosebuds last night. The sound that is captured in their recordings is even more elegant live, and the performance reaffirmed the fine quality of Phil Moore’s and Beth Tacular’s voices. It was a soothing set faithful to the recordings, rarely interrupted by any talking. “In Our Talons,” with its energetic chorus, was beautifully rendered. Friend Mark Paulson was also present, switching between bass drum and violin (Beth switched between bass drum and accordian). For the last song they played “Dark Horse,” and two members of the Rosebuds came out to sing the exiting refrain. Almost half the space had filled up through their early set, but it shouldn’t be long till Bowerbirds plays to a devoted audience.

Hymns for a Dark Horse is a superb album from the NC duo (sometimes trio) Bowerbirds. I’ll be posting an album review next week, but don’t forget they’re playing tonight at Bowery Ballroom, they’re scheduled to go on sharp at 8:15 pm. Myspace is streaming.

I’m From Barcelona has added a second Brooklyn date: August 6th at Southpaw (following August 5th at McCarren Pool). And after playing Bowery Ballroom with Friday Hyvönen, Danish band Under Byen is coming back, this time at Knitting Factory on July 9th with Album Leaf.
To be accurate, Miranda July read at Paula Cooper Gallery. It sits just around the corner from the tiny 192 Books, who organized the reading, and where it was originally supposed to be held. Perhaps best-known for having written and starred in the movie Me and You and Everyone We Know, Miranda’s in New York promoting her collection of short stories, No One Belongs Here More Than You. It comes in two choices of cover: yellow and pink.
