Frog Eyes, Alex Delivery played Union Hall – videos + curious incidents

Next to its performance space, Union Hall has one of the most beautiful bathrooms. Stylish sinks against one wall and unisex stalls against another. These have full-length, wooden doors for privacy, with a sign that changes between “Vacant” and “Occupied.” Here, Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes claimed, was a pervert on the loose. He began the show by asking if anyone had seen him. He explained: a woman had opened a door that said “Vacant,” and the man inside had responded, “Oh, come in.” When the singer asked if the pervert was in the audience, several hands went up.

Andrew Bird played Webster Hall – photos

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/qvRa57K7bs/aus=false/]

Andrew Bird was willing to be a lot sillier at Webster Hall last night, throwing up his arms clumsily in dramatic gestures and making playful pauses in some of the stylized performances. Characteristic of him, he does it all with a straight face, even when he brought out the sock monkey someone made for him. He held the figure in his hands and took the time to show off his clothing (pin stripe suit), especially the socks, as well as the violin he carries on his back. After this the monkey sat in front of one of the gramaphone amps for the rest of the night.

Favorite song of the week: "Snjor ljos snjor" by Benni Hemm Hemm

Download “Snjor ljos snjor” (from Kajak)
[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/wK_LcNJtKI/aus=false/]

benn.jpgAn early posting for this week’s favorite tune, and there are several reasons. Iceland’s Benni Hemm Hemm and gang (we hope at least eleven of the seventeen) will be heading to the US for the very first time, including a July 5 stop at Mercury Lounge. Icelandic, even in Sigur Ros’ gibberish installment of it, sounds extremely adorable- we can confirm this is true at least when one doesn’t understand the meaning behind these prancing syllables. The song has a really earthy feel to it, and perhaps it is the quality of Benni’s voice that matches the soft horns. The melodies are repetitious but they add to a tune both jubilant and sorrowful without being too obvious. I think Benni’s good for spring!

“Snjor ljos snjor” is from Benni’s second album Kajak, which was recorded by an ensemble of eleven musicians in four days at the same studio used by Sigur Ros. Morr Music label will put it out in the US on May 22.

Grizzly Bear does French

From who else but La Blogotheque:

I believe this is the result of the lyrics contest. There’re also the take-away shows from last year, and the band will be supporting the Decemberists at this year’s Summerstage on July 16.

Dan Deacon dirty mash-up

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/zfCSk6DM0b/aus=false/]

Oh no! Deacon’s been vulgarized. I don’t think it’s appropriate to blend winged Wham City dwellers with Khia’s top ho’ness. I’m not a fan of this mix, but Absorb the Lip Goss still rocks.

Final Fantasy at Bowery Ballroom – May 8 video

In the midst of Beirut-induced buzz I might’ve under-emphasized the merit of Final Fantasy sets. Here’s some evidence from the May 8th show. He played this after wondering out loud if he should play a downer, and before Beirut joined him for the last song, “That’s When the Audience Died.”
