Feist played Town Hall – review + photos

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/KmH4NDjYPt/aus=false/]

feist_scream.jpg

After all the exposure to magazine spreads featuring Feist’s pretty face, it was much relief to see one my favorite badasses in person. Her live version of songs have always been more gutsy (and often more blues-y), but the material from her latest, The Reminder, does especially well. “My Moon My Man,” for example, sounded almost legendary. “Sea Lion Woman,” which has been a live favorite ever since she started playing it, was an absolute blast and a great choice for the encore. Feist’s boyfriend (and Broken Social Scene frontman) Kevin Drew made an announced entrance for a solo piano accompaniment to a slow version of “Lover’s Spit.” But he also casually came back with a tambourine for “Sea Lion Woman,” dancing away silly with Bryden Baird, Feist’s trumpet player. It was a great sight.

Apostle of Hustle played Mercury Lounge – review

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/MvhsTkRCxq/aus=false/]

I missed the first of the many Apostle of Hustle NYC shows for Feist, but my friend (and fellow vinyl scavenger) Borchers fills us in:

Photo: Sam Horine

Apostle of Hustle played the first of their 3-week bi-city residencies last night at Mercury Lounge. Wednesday they fly to Chicago to play their other residence, Schuba’s Tavern. After I missed the first opener, Murder Mystery, and didn’t pay attention to the second, Ola Podrida, this Broken Social Sceneside-project (that’s an understatement, this is AoH’s second album tour) started out cool and calm, but then rocked out to their album’s title track, “National Anthem of Nowhere.” Apprently there was a scene at the foot of the stage when frontman Andrew Whiteman became a little too enthused in his drumming and knocked a tambourine into his red wine; at which point he requested a new glass (plastic cup) of “le Rouge.”

Grizzly Bear played Town Hall (w/ Feist)

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/Rwwb94o-3W/aus=false/]

grizzly_1.jpg

Brooklyn’s own Grizzly Bear are on tour with Feist, and they played a sparkling set at Town Hall on Monday night. It was awesome to see a band play every note and sing every melody as intended. This performance really showed that the roles they’ve found for each member, with all four singing at various times, is a reflection of their organic coming-together. They fit right into each other. I was seated in front of drummer Christopher Bear, whose every nuanced movement produced great, refined sounds. Bassist Chris Taylor was often on his knees to play the flute, but I especially enjoyed it when he stood up to sing in a high voice.

Paprika (Watch the trailer)

Release in New York: May 25, 2007 from Sony Pictures Classics
Language: Japanese

Satoshi Kon’s adaptation of Yasutaka Tsutsui’s sci-fi novel is an elaborate weave of endless imaginations. Animators at Madhouse, Inc. have marvelously brought this bizarre tale to a colorful life. Every bit of the flim is magical, both in idea and execution. The plot involves intrustion of dreams, so it’s free to defy physics, or any rational notion of space and time. But logic is in place, and is, at times, even profound. You’ll just have to grasp its thread and hang on tight. The song posted above, by Hirasawa Susumu, is the theme song. Showtimes at Angelika.

Get Him Eat Him – Arms Down

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/z__11KKg3w/aus=false/]

Release: June 5, 2007 / Absolutely Kosher

gethimeathim-armsdown250.jpgArms Down is Get Him Eat Him’s follow-up to 2005’s Geography Cones. I’ve been letting this new one sit for a while, hoping I would either grow to love it, or figure out why I don’t. It’s not a bad record, but you know you like an album when, if it were a basket of strawberries at the market, you’d want to take at least some of it home (yes). Arms Down inspired no such greed, so I turned to the albums I do love. These tend to have an unintentional greater idea behind them, the kind that comes together as a result of other intentions and inspirations, the outcome of things falling into place. In Arms Down, that sort of idea is either missing, or, if present, not very alive.

There’s more after the jump.

According to Angry Ape:

Ra Ra Riot drummer John Pike was found dead in Massachusetts, following his disappearance at weekend.

Pike went missing early on Saturday (June 2nd) morning after a party in Fairheaven – the band had played a show in Providence, RI on the Friday night.

His cell phone was then found in shallow water on a beach about half a mile from where the party was held, then on Sunday afternoon at around 4pm, his body was found immersed in water seven feet deep at Buzzards Bay.

Lavender Diamond played Bowery Ballroom – review + photos

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/8vpdIbfFCx/aus=false/]

After spending gruelling hours at work all weekend, running through the rain to catch Lavender Diamond at Bowery Ballroom was a fantastic decision. The Chapin Sisters, who make an appearance on Lavender Diamond’s latest Imagine Our Love, were almost through their set when I got there (Entrance opened before them). At first I worried over the thin crowd that looked like a ladies night out (we might as well have been given picnic baskets). But as soon as they left the stage, the crowd closed in, and the space filled up nicely, though not completely, by the time Becky Stark and friends came on.

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/lAe_TKOVZC/aus=false/]

Becky Stark is a charm, and her energy’s contagious. She uses the words “love” and “peace” unapologetically, has an immensely trained voice that is big without being loud, and is truly happy to be on stage. She made an entrace frolicking and waving. After each song, she jumped in excitement, reiterating how awesome it was going to be as we got “deeper into the night,” wishing that they had a song titled “Deeper Into the Night.” After playing “Open Your Heart,” which the band has nicknamed “the practical song,” she asked if she was allowed to say, “I love that song!” She wondered if that would be inappropriate or uncool.

More Becky Stark obssession after the jump.

Animal Collective played Seaport Music Festival

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/NWFYhqI9ry/aus=false/]

Photo: logan takahashi

Pier 17 is not my favorite venue, but Seaport Music Festival has an exciting line-up this year. I made it to the opening night just in time to catch the uniformed Danielson wrapping up, and not sounding very spectacular. An early drizzle had cooled things down a bit, but by the time Animal Collective took stage, the weather was holding up and there was enough body heat to make for a sticky night. The turnout, for the first of the many outdoor shows coming up this summer, was impressive. Afterwards we loitered across the street from the Broadway Nassau train station, and the stream of concert-goers heading home seemed endless. There was barely any space between people at the show, but several of my neighbors showcased some inspired dancing anyway.
