Download “To Get Things Straight” | Locas in Love is a precious little project formed by Stefanie Schrank, Björn Sonnenberg, and Jan Niklas Jansen, who also play with Germany’s “powerpop” band, Karpatenhund. Having missed the trio’s Cross-Pollination show with the Blood Sugars at Pianos, I caught up with them at their makeshift studio in Bushwick, where their host, Sam, arrived just in time to play the tambourine. They play two songs for us; we meet Sebastian the cat; Bjorn indulges in a little bit of Bushwick history, introduces Yeti-bama, and takes it to the street.

This Will Destroy You, Lymbyc Systym, Joemca played Union Hall

Download “Thread” | By the time Austin’s post-rock, instrumental quartet This Will Destroy You began to set up after Joemca’s opening set, the crowd in the cozy basement had thickened and moved right up front. The intense scrutiny that followed from a wall of faithful fans as the four members quaintly plugged this and that on a stage that is perhaps only a foot high is one of the rarities offered by the dimly lit Union Hall. There was a persistent guitar hum that Chris King eventually shrugged off with a mildly (very mildly) frustrated smile, but the sound that followed was pretty explosive for that tiny room (and the hum all but forgotten). At other shows I’ve seen there, including Andrew Bird’s secret gathering with the amazing Martin Dosh, and St. Vincent’s wildly expressive set, I don’t recall the sound being so well-suited for these muddy walls. The band members were pretty quiet, not uttering a single word, except when a drum stick flew off Andrew Miller’s hand, and Jeremy Galindo mouthed “thank you” to the fan who picked it up and returned it. The set, though, was consistently solid and immersive, and Andrew Miller was insane on the drums.

Talkdemonic’s Eyes at Half Mast

Label: Arena Rock
Release: September 16, 2008

Download “March Movement” | When talking about a beautiful, wordless album like Talkdemonic’s Eyes at Half Mast, I’m sure the temptation to decode the narrative will come as irresistible to many. You could start with the album’s mysterious title, though any dimwit will realize quickly that the story here is not of weariness. If anything, the music exuberantly spins and spins from pretty much a single thematic source of inspiration without ever running thin. That leaves us with at least three other interpretations of the half-open eyes that adorn the title and the album artwork: the rushing of the mind and the awakening of the better part of it right before falling asleep; the blurriness of one’s vision and the unseeing of contours in favor of shapes; and the eyes that have yet to close before death.

Dark Dark Dark Sings at the Secret Garden

Dark Dark Dark was founded by wandering musicians Nona Marie Invie and Marshall Lacount, and when I first heard a song from their forthcoming album The Snow Magic, the imprints of travel and rootlessness must have been immediately apparent because it just so happens that I believe wandering musicians and rootlessness to embody the spirit of music, and unsurprisingly, I instantly fell in love with the band. So I was more than psyched to film these videos with them in Bushwick, where they were shooting a proper music video for the song “Colors” with Michael Hart.

Project Runway at Bryant Park: Leanne, pics

Holy crap, my favorite of the season, Leanne Marshall, put together an intense collection for Fashion Week (I like hers and Korto’s equally, though Korto’s is definitely more classy and elegant, and Leanne’s is more architectural, which I have a soft spot for). She and Korto both seem to have snatched some fabulous non-white models as well, which in itself should be considered a small victory for the fashion world.

The pieces I don’t like in Leanne’s collection are the awkward skirt in picture #3 and the weird curves that result in a pointy edge in the top seen in picture #4.

Project Runway at Bryant Park: Korto, pics

Woah, Korto’s collection is pretty damn solid. Outshines the preceding collection by Kenley much more easily than I’d imagined. But the bottom part of the short green dress with the front slit is kind of scarry.
