Win The Tallest Man on Earth’s “The Wild Hunt” Vinyl

The Tallest Man on Earth’s The Wild Hunt came out today, woo-hoo. Ever since I got my hands on it, I’ve listened to each song a crazy number of times (except the last one, “Kids on the Run”, because I just can’t get into the piano arrangement).

In addition to the generation-defining “King of Spain”, my current favorites are the folky-punchy “You’re Going Back”, which is full of swagger and youthful arrogance: “You said, driver please, don’t go that fucking way”; and the oddly aged “Thousand Ways”, in which the line between comedy and tragedy is all but faded: ”But I’ll always be blamed for the sun going down with us all / But I’m the light in the middle of every man’s fall” and then, “I bend my arrows down [?] in circles and I shoot around the hill / If I don’t get you in the morning, by the evening I sure will”).

That title track is a killer too. Buy the album!

Win two tickets to The Antlers

antlers_contest

The Antlers are self-releasing their album, Hospice, on March 3, and playing a record release show with guest performers at Union Hall on March 5th. To be entered to win two tickets, write to hoovesontheturf [at] gmail [dot] com about what you think of the song, “Bear”, posted below. Deadline is March 3, Tuesday, 4pm, and a winner will be picked using a top secret, super magical, out of this world algorithm. [Photo by Bryan Bruchman]

For a band out of Brooklyn, Hospice has an unlikely climate: a good deal of it sounds like it’s been weathered by clouds that are always a dull grey and winters that are especially long; not the kind of sullenness that’s too forthcoming, not like Antony and the Johnsons, but a sort of disinterested calm you’d think would creep from underneath cool shadows. Kind of like Sigur Ros in English, with far less yelling. When fellow Brooklynite Sharon van Etten* makes a brief (yet awesome) appearance in “Thirteen”, though, the sulks get fiery and warm again, and you recognize it right away. “Hand-assembled” copies of Hospice can be pre-ordered from the band’s website.

Win 2 tickets to Final Fantasy and Matt Smith at the Kitchen

You know what happens when you have tickets to Beirut and Final Fantasy on the same day (Feb 6), and These United States announces they’re also going to play Union Hall on that very day, because everyone obviously loves Feb 6? You cancel all other plans and go see These United States. That’s right. I already got rid of my Beirut tickets (that was easy!) and I’ve decided to give away the Final Fantasy ones here. They’re for the 8PM show this Friday. All you have to do is write to me at hoovesontheturf [at] gmail [dot] com and tell me something you found on this site that you liked, and something that maybe you didn’t like as much. Just be sincere and frank, and you’ll probably win. No need to be witty or overly entertaining. I’ll do a draw from all qualifying entries. These are hard tickets, and you’d need to come pick them up in the West Village area. Deadline is Thursday, Feb 5, noon.

[Update: Contest is now closed! Thanks so much for writing in, I loved hearing what you had to say, and I'll contact the winner shortly the winner has been contacted]
