Dark Dark Dark’s Nona Marie Invie (accordion/keys/voice), Marshall LaCount (banjo/voice) and Todd Chandler (upright bass) will be joined by Hurray for the Riff Raff’s Walt McClements (trumpet) for a special performance at the super intimate Sycamore on July 9.
You know how I always say their shows make you think you’re on some sort of a boat? Well prepare to sway and float on imaginary waves of far-reaching and heart-crunching dark-chocolate flavors of bitterness and sweetness of melodies and words (!), because it’ll be Nona Marie’s and Marshall’s already superbly complimentary and forlorn voices booming in that boat of a room to the tides and yearnings of Walt’s trumpet and the murmurs of Todd’s bass! Come on out with an emotionally able heart then, won’t you? It’s $10 at the door.
Yes, yes, I’m very well aware that you are tired of that word “Northside” by now, especially if you don’t even live in Brooklyn. Bear with me, though: the show is tomorrow, it’s for FREE, and some of the hardest working, most awesomely talented bands are playing, so I just want to give ‘em as much pre-show love as possible, in asking you for during-the-show love.
Definitely come EARLY! Afuche has prepared a ‘head fuck’ for you. There will be a group of interpretive dancers, the band’s very own ‘Afuchitas’. Tune-Yards will play next, and if you have seen our video of her, you know that she rocks. What it means is you’re getting Afuche, Tune-Yards and the very handsome trio bearing Luke Winslow-King’s name in the first hour and a half. And if you’ve seen our video of that trio, you know it’s a very handsome trio indeed. It’s a highly recommended first hour and a half, is all I’m saying.
Have you checked out who’s playing Brooklyn’s Northside Festival starting tomorrow? Here’s a round-up from QRO Magazine, in case you were overwhelmed, and here’s the full schedule. And here are the latest details on our FREE day show at Trophy Bar, June 13.
The video invitation above has been You-Tube-fied for the You Tube friendly folks out there, in case you missed it before.
We’d love for you to come and be part of this fantastic madness. It’s for FREE, and it’s during the day on a Saturday, and we’ll be selling top notch homemade food in the backyard. A lot of the performances will be unamplified, which is always twice as fun. It’s too bad that I’m organizing this show because ideally I would’ve liked to just sit and watch this whole thing myself. Get a taste of who’s playing:
Hooves on the Turf’s Northside Festival showcase
at Trophy Bar, 351 Broadway Brooklyn, NY 11211
Quiet Hooves, a gang of lovable hooligans from Athens, Georgia, was my favorite discovery at this year’s SXSW. Whether it was playing a hill top at 2AM or rocking out at the back of a thrift store, it seemed like they were always the ones up to most interesting things. They’re currently touring with Bird Names, an experimental pop outfit from Chicago, and both are stopping in New York for a few dates. Naturally, we jumped on the chance to host a show for them, and it’s gonna be on May 25th; in Crown Heights no less (official home of this blog); at the backyard of a burger joint, even; open to the public for FREE, what’s more! On Memorial Day, say what?! So why don’t you put on your herb-fries-loving best and come out?!
We’re gonna be making a proper announcement on our Northside Festival line-up next week, but until then, here’s a brand new video from Sharon Van Etten, who’s one of the eight or so artists confirmed to play our FREE day showcase at Trophy Bar on June 13th (Saturday).
In the spirit of our Secret Garden videos, the sets will be minimally amplified, and we’re so thrilled to have Sharon, who was our very first Secret Garden subject, who happened to unintentionally give the series its “Secret Garden” name in the first place, and whose upcoming album Because I Was in Love has been blowing my mind.

Mark Charles Heidinger, whom the French love, and his sister in spirit, Rose Guerin, will be in New York this month for a two-date stop, one of which we are presenting with much excitement!
May 26 (9PM Sharp) at Sycamore
1118 Cortelyou Rd, Brooklyn. $10 at the door.
You see, Mark has the kind of voice that will make you want to curl up, and Rose has the kind that will tease and seduce you, and Sycamore is the kind of place that just makes you go, “Wow”, so it’s kind of a killer combo, you know? (I’ve already declared that it’s my new favorite venue). The seating is quite limited, and the atmosphere is warm and fuzzy, so it should be a stellar intimate show.
