We’re being told Holland’s Alamo Race Track is a You Tube success story, managing to generate a buzz when a Dutch blogger posted a dressing room performance of “Black Cat John Brown.” Then came a warm reception at SXSW, followed by further American exposure on Grey’s Anatomy. The foursome has also been covered by La Blogotheque for its take-away shows, with band members playing from different balconies of a building in Paris.

Minty Fresh Records will make a US release of their album Black Cat John Brown in July. “Northern Territory” also has a video.

Final Fantasy leads the pack in another compilation- Esopus Magazine’s eighth installment, Esopus 8, of which the theme is spam. As in junk mail. In “For Me to Say,” Frida Hyvönen sings:
Someone cared to send me
A letter to recommend me
To enlarge my penis
Surgery and exercise,
Would I walk that extra mile to
Enlarge my penis?
Owen Pallett / Final Fantasy’s “Flare Gun” is less direct, involving fortresses, birds and beasts. Trademark strings and piano are in full swing. Entire album can be previewed.

Much like the sound of Mum, Efterklang’s “Towards the Bare Hill” is filled with forlorn percussive enchantments accompanied by moody accordian moans. Unlike Mum, however, the chorus here is a booming masculine one, like that of sailors. Meanwhile, 1-20 of their numbered 1200 vinyl copies of Under the Trees were stolen during production, so they are offering 10 remaining ones of personal copies on ebay. These will be labeled by the following Danish letters: d, i, j, q, u, w, x, z, ø and å, and proceeds will be put towards a fund to purchase a piece of an untouched rainforest in order to preserve it. The EP comes out in the US on May 7.

Sweden’s Frida Hyvonen’s got a bold personality and a defiant voice to match. She toured with Denmark’s Under Byen and stopped by at Bowery Ballroom in March. There she played a solid solo set, asking the audience to buy her a glass of white wine and promising to buy one for whoever volunteered later. “You Never Got Me Right,” a personal favorite of mine from the album, gives an example of her smart lyrics and angsty folk sound. In “Cricket” I’ve left a little bit of the amusing conversation in the beginning. It’ll fill you in on the musical Pudel, and on how Frida feels about some Poodle owners.

Download “So Post All ‘Em” (from forthcoming I Believe in You. Your Magic Is Real.)

[imeem http://media.imeem.com/m/tkNgYKoxgq/aus=false]

The album will come out on Marriage Records, on the same day I’ll be seeing Beirut at Bowery (May 8). This would be even more exciting if YACHT’s expanded tour included a New York date, but it does not. It does include, though, a May 5 release party on an actual yacht. Folks will board Crystal Dolphin at 6pm sharp in Oregon and dock at The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry for continued partying. Marriage Records says they’ll announce details for a contest to win 5 spots on the Crystal soon. If you plan to attend, you’ll need these.
But I’m happy to announce one of my favorites on the upcoming album is now available for happy downloading.

Simple, no-fuss punches on the guitar, Giselle’s vintage voice and a slip of Bjork-ish accents here and there- listen to “38th adventure” from Montreal’s Hot Springs. Also, they’ve changed their Brooklyn date at Galapagos to Aug 3.

Malajube performs three songs for Daytrotter, including two instrumentals they’ve been playing at recent shows. The first one, “Crystal Ball,” has been the consistent choice for an opener, though this version has several new additions, now sounding finished at 5 minutes and 16 seconds! The other two are “Etienne D’aout,” for which they have a new video, nd “la Contrôleuse.”
The bootleg I’ve uploaded is a dirty recording, but the show at Mercury Lounge was a charged one, and audience participation / Julien’s comments make it a fun listen.

Release Date: May 8, 2007

On the surface Spiderman of the Rings may sound like the kind of record where anything goes. High-pitched voices sing without intending to be pretty, and sporadic noises from the world of pixels are found in plenty. The playfulness of it all has been so skillfully whipped that glaring choices seem to have been made out of pure silliness. There’s enough evidence, however, to indicate otherwise; that this is a record where a particular aesthetic has been sought, be it a seemingly bizarre one, and classically-trained Dan Deacon has expertly brought it under his control so he may let it loose.

Download Colleen (via Puddlegum, from Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band EP)

Photo: shannon mcclean
A lot of us who buy vinyl paid about $21 for 5 Joanna Newsom songs, but that’s because the record was a double disc deal and each song averaged at 13 minutes. InSound is selling the three-track 12″ Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band for $13.99 + shipping. Other Music’s got a slightly better deal at $10.99 (+ shipping if you buy online). We’ll have to head to the physical store and investigage the worthiness of this purchase. Speaking of Other Music, it has just fully launched its digital store.
In the meantime, the Sound Fix Records website has been down for a few days now. That must be investigaged too.
