Posts about Are Weapons

I generally find it difficult to wholeheartedly love music videos: in the given format, the number of things you can do is ultimately quite limited, and there is an overwhelming tendency to do the same things over and over again, out of which some that I’m wary of are: linear stories, a literal interpretation of the lyrics, a typical ending where something explosive happens and we revel in the band’s performance, dream-like fluidity where random otherworldly things happen, and an overemphasis on tricks and effects. These tendencies aren’t always bad by nature, but they do seem to make awesomeness especially hard in music videos.

Death by Audio: Israel’s Monotonix was formed “with the mission of redefining the rock show”, so they should perhaps be expected to kick some butt at Death by Audio. They told us, “New York is one of our favorite cities to play. After doing two support shows for Silver Jews for a more ’settled’ audience [Music Hall & Bowery the last two nights], we are very excited to do the organic thing and go back to a place like Death by Audio”. How about the tour? “Tour has been great, we just flew in from the west coast where the shows were really wild and fun, and we are happy to be back in our van driving down the east coast.” They’ll be joined by Knyfe Hyts, who’ll be touring a few cities with Deerhunter later this year, and Shellshag.

Virgin Megastore: You don’t get much love on Tuesdays, so work that butt; see Ra Ra Riots for free at Virgin Megastore, Union Square, but first beat the pack flocking there to get a wristband by purchasing The Rhumb Line, which came out today. The performance is at the store’s cafe at 7PM, and of course space is limited so you must get there early.
The Tank: But never fear, Todd P will show you love; Best Friends Forever, Acht(en), Screaming Females and Puttin’ On The Ritz look promising. (On a side note, I recently found out from all the furrowing and scouring my friend Enid Crow does in the neighborhood that there are secret house shows happening right here in Crown Heights! And not that part of Crown Heights that real estate people like to call Prospect Heights. This secret spot is east of New York Avenue, so it’s 100% CH. New Jersey’s Screaming Females are also playing there on September 26th)
