Best Releases of 2010

2010 was a dull year for discovering new bands; caught between over hype and under hype, the ripe atmosphere for discovery is quickly diminishing. The Cults signed to Columbia Records, Tennis played their first New York show at the large capacity Terminal 5, Blackberry got maximum coverage out of a Tune Yards song, Best Coast and Wavves annoyed the half of us with their money-friendly philosophy on selling out. So I stuck to, for the most part, old favorites who made great new releases. As far as releases go, that Future Islands put out their first proper full length, and that Lower Dens became a band, were probably the highlights for me. I wonder whatever happened to Yellow Fever’s release, though — their new songs seemed ready to go pretty early in the year! But here it is, the top 10.

SXSW Day 2: Thee Oh Sees, Woods, Dark Dark Dark, and more

The day began with an interview Impose was filming with Harmony Korine. It was at an awesome Mexican restaurant. When I got about a 15-minute notice to photograph it, I pretty much jumped out of my bed at the opportunity of seeing Harmony  in person and eating an amazing burrito at the same time. Here he is holding a piñata just purchased from the store across the street:

Brigid Dawson of Thee Oh Sees rules

Brigid Dawson is second from left

Brigid Dawson is second from left

Daytrotter posted a Thee Oh Sees session yesterday (“Ruby Go Home” included), and while the accompanying text talks about front man John Dwyer at length, it doesn’t mention Brigid Dawson by name once. But if you’re like me, it’s pretty obvious that the band would have half its might without Ms. Dawson. This thought led me to her wikipedia page, which had been deleted twice because she wasn’t deemed “notable” enough. So I went ahead and spent a good part of the morning re-creating a new one for her, highlighting her notability: My new Brigid Dawson page on Wikipedia.

Let’s see how long it will stay up.
