Best Releases of 2010

2010 was a dull year for discovering new bands; caught between over hype and under hype, the ripe atmosphere for discovery is quickly diminishing. The Cults signed to Columbia Records, Tennis played their first New York show at the large capacity Terminal 5, Blackberry got maximum coverage out of a Tune Yards song, Best Coast and Wavves annoyed the half of us with their money-friendly philosophy on selling out. So I stuck to, for the most part, old favorites who made great new releases. As far as releases go, that Future Islands put out their first proper full length, and that Lower Dens became a band, were probably the highlights for me. I wonder whatever happened to Yellow Fever’s release, though — their new songs seemed ready to go pretty early in the year! But here it is, the top 10.

Who’s excited about new Tony Castles EP? ME! I AM!

Cover for Tony Castles' New Service EP

Tony Castles are runaway kings of first-impression love affairs: they ride around on their dark horses with forlorn eyes, prompting women and men alike everywhere to drop on their knees and swoon. That was pretty much the story unfolding in my universe when I first saw them in Austin earlier this year. They sounded like top grade high school prom music for emotionally mature adults, which may offer nothing to stiffened hearts, but not us (you and I)—we are suckers for top grade prom music, obviously. I’m listening to the first single, “Black Girls in Dresses” and dropping all guards against music that’s infectious on the first listen. I mean, boyish lust for black girls in dresses? Sure, I’ll take that.

“Black Girls in Dresses” is off their five-song No Service EP, their first proper release coming out on Famous Class Records on Sept 21.

SXSW Day 1: White Denim, Jeff the Brotherhood, Darlings, and more

Hello everyone, we drove to Austin this year and I’m pretty out of it. Car lag is way more severe than jet lag. Spent most of the trip with non-functional internet. But I hate blogging these days anyway, what a time suck. And look how tiny these pictures look, I need to redesign this site. Lots of great bands in this post, though.
