Hello everyone, we drove to Austin this year and I’m pretty out of it. Car lag is way more severe than jet lag. Spent most of the trip with non-functional internet. But I hate blogging these days anyway, what a time suck. And look how tiny these pictures look, I need to redesign this site. Lots of great bands in this post, though.

March 17 | Soon after I arrived in Austin, I headed to Ms. Bea’s for Todd P’s all-ages, free patio party, “Tejas Means Friends”, which featured half-hour sets from nine Texan bands. Given the circumstances of the venue (this being an outdoors show outside of a modest bar), the acoustics was naturally poor. But the weather was perfect and the atmosphere was relaxed, and I fulfilled one of my main goals I set for the trip, to see White Denim at least once.

Admittedly, I’m not familiar with every single band involved in this year’s SXSW festivities, officially or unofficially, though I did listen to well over two hundred bands I don’t care to listen to ever again. Unlike them, the list compiled here includes twenty performers I think are most worth seeing, and for free, no less; as far as I know, all of them are either playing unofficial shows, or plan to play whatever last-minute gatherings that come their way.

I generally find it difficult to wholeheartedly love music videos: in the given format, the number of things you can do is ultimately quite limited, and there is an overwhelming tendency to do the same things over and over again, out of which some that I’m wary of are: linear stories, a literal interpretation of the lyrics, a typical ending where something explosive happens and we revel in the band’s performance, dream-like fluidity where random otherworldly things happen, and an overemphasis on tricks and effects. These tendencies aren’t always bad by nature, but they do seem to make awesomeness especially hard in music videos.
