I generally find it difficult to wholeheartedly love music videos: in the given format, the number of things you can do is ultimately quite limited, and there is an overwhelming tendency to do the same things over and over again, out of which some that I’m wary of are: linear stories, a literal interpretation of the lyrics, a typical ending where something explosive happens and we revel in the band’s performance, dream-like fluidity where random otherworldly things happen, and an overemphasis on tricks and effects. These tendencies aren’t always bad by nature, but they do seem to make awesomeness especially hard in music videos.

Publicity photographs of My Brightest Diamond tend to be aesthetically conscious, and there is a similar intention in this video for “Magic Rabbit” by photographer Murat Eyuboglu. It’s primarily the slowness of it, but also the photographic quality and the way in which Shara Worden fits in perfectly that makes me really like it. Some of the imagery borders on being cliche, but the rest is refreshing, and the almost whimsical editing makes it work. Besides, this Alfred Brown remix of the song is pretty fantastic, and he’s got other good stuff on his myspace page.

Sunday: Asthmatic Kitty’s Unusual Animals Series will host a release party for Canada’s Shapes and Sizes on May 13th at Union Hall. The album is Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner, which comes out on May 22. They will head out on a North American tour with the National in June, and are stopping by for one more NY date at the Cake Shop on May 11th.

Saturday: A terrible conflict of interest: YACHT plays w/ LCD Soundsystem at Studio B. Dan Deacon plays Mercury Lounge ($8).
Friday: Banjo-loving Illinois play w/ the Kooks at Filmore at New York Irving Plaza, currently sold out. Or head to Sound Fix Records to see a free Mountain Goats show or the previously-mentioned Shapes and Sizes at Cake Shop.

And this is happening too, yes it is! YACHT’s coming back to New York w/ LCD Soundsystem. Studio B on May 12 and Webster Hall on May 14. The terrible news is that if you don’t already have tickets, both shows are sold out online. There might be some for Studio B at the door.

The album will come out on Marriage Records, on the same day I’ll be seeing Beirut at Bowery (May 8). This would be even more exciting if YACHT’s expanded tour included a New York date, but it does not. It does include, though, a May 5 release party on an actual yacht. Folks will board Crystal Dolphin at 6pm sharp in Oregon and dock at The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry for continued partying. Marriage Records says they’ll announce details for a contest to win 5 spots on the Crystal soon. If you plan to attend, you’ll need these.
But I’m happy to announce one of my favorites on the upcoming album is now available for happy downloading.

This song is old, but I only heard it this week. And I stole this photo from YACHT’s flickr. I couldn’t find any from the Rhizome benefit at Hiro Ballroom. Who went, I’d like to know. Also: Friday!
