Video: Yeasayer at Music Hall. Plus, Suckers and Gates of Heaven

After 14 months on the road, Yeasayer’s show at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday night was the last of the tour, which is probably why front man Chris Keating smashed his gear after a charged encore performance of “Wait for the Wintertime.” The show was pretty incredible, I enjoyed it far more than the last time I saw them, which was at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple in April, with Man Man (and their crazy fans). While thanking all their supporters and appearing relieved to have returned home to Brooklyn, Chris mentioned that it seemed like a good start to the next eight years, “If you know what I mean.”

I was initially bummed that I didn’t see the Friday show with opener Chairlift, as I’d originally planned, but I saw Suckers instead, and I loved them. Quinn Walker’s amazing and he’s got a colorful personality; the whole band does: Suckers is the kind of “hipster” band with an ironic band name, and members who draw on their faces and wear headband, that you’re totally right to love; feel no shame, you overly self-conscious music listeners!

Gates of Heaven

Staten Island’s Gates of Heaven was the first opener. They were cool, but the “act” was a little overwhelming for me, and the music isn’t entirely my type though it was enjoyable as long as it was limited to a certain time. I did respond better to songs that had somewhat of a “hip hop” beat? If I’m not mistaken, the two of them were wearing the female version of the Indian outfit known as “Kurthas”, which was cute. They seemed adorable, in all their sincere silliness, with a mic headset and open hearts and what not.

Yeasayer Tour & All Hour Cymbals LP

Excellent news from the Yeasayer camp: a two-legged North American tour later this year, one I’ve been restlessly waiting for, that’ll see the band as headliners for the first time. The dates that concern us are Dec 5th & 6th at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

The band’s manager Sir James Winnie promises: “brand new songs not heard on previous N. American tours; a repaired voice for the son of Cricket, Anand Wilder; new stage design incorporating projectors, lcd grids, and possibly a weather balloon.”

Also later this year will come an artifact that’ll be a pleasure to possess: All Hour Cymbals in LP format, pressed on 180 gram black vinyl. And hopefully next year we’ll have our hands on the follow-up album, scheduled to be recorded in early 2009. Apparently Sir Winnie has heard the demos and finds them to be “mind slaying”. Sounds great to us!

Yesayer, King Khan & more tonight

The fabulous Yeasayer is playing a ticketed, non-free sold out show at Summer Stage. They’re playing with Plants and Animals and headliners The National // The Almighty King Khan & BBQ Show plays at Santos Party House (see pictures from Sunday’s McCarren Pool show), with K-Holes, which includes former members of Black Lips // Chicago’s DJ duo Flosstradamus, presenting themselves for the purpose of “everyone having a cool as time“, will play Santos Party House late night.

Apollo Sunshine, I Am The Bison, Digital Santa at Union Pool // I’ve no idea who this Young Love is, but he seems to have a lot of myspace fans; playing with Soft, and The GoStation at Rebel // Bright Lights, The Faintest Ideas, Young Untold and The Specific Heats at Cake Shop.

Download “Sunrise” | Download “2080″ | Before Man Man took stage, Yeasayer played. I’d been pretty frustrated with Coyote’s opening set, I hadn’t enjoyed it at all, so when Yeasayer finally started, it was no less than hills awash with sun beams. I love how this band is devoid of any nonsense, how the four work so well together despite appearing to have very different personalities (especially their sense of fashion). It was a completely cohesive sound, and there was no trace of disconnect. The singing is filled with great details, both on stage and off. And I’m not sure if the effect was heightened by not enjoying Coyote’s songwriting, but what shines in Yeasayer for me is the determination to do nothing less than push the form we call music to uncertain boundaries, where beautiful things eventually happen.
